Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's fixed four-year term, which began with his May 2024 inauguration, extends through 2028 and underpins trader expectations that he will remain in office through December 2026. Opposition parties initiated impeachment proceedings in late 2025 over legislative disputes, but the May 19, 2026, Legislative Yuan vote fell well short of the required two-thirds supermajority. Lai continues official duties, including public addresses on sovereignty and resilience, with no verified developments indicating resignation, health-related incapacity, or successful removal. While a future legislative shift or extraordinary event could alter this trajectory, the structural barriers and recent failed challenge support the current market consensus.
