Nikola Bartunkova, the higher-ranked Czech at No. 69, faces home favorite Harriet Dart in the first round of the Lexus Birmingham Open on grass. Bartunkova enters with strong recent momentum, including a lucky-loser run to the Rome WTA 1000 round of 16 and her first top-10 win earlier in the year, though her grass-court experience remains limited. Dart, a 29-year-old British player receiving a wild card, brings familiarity with the surface and venue plus recent doubles success, highlighted by a round-of-16 victory over Bartunkova and Alexandra Eala the previous day. The matchup pits the younger player's rising form against Dart's veteran grass-court comfort and home support in what shapes up as a competitive opener on the fast surface.
