Ramzan Kadyrov continues to hold the position of Head of the Chechen Republic, with Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly endorsing his candidacy for another term during an April 29, 2026 Kremlin meeting ahead of the scheduled September 2026 regional election. Persistent health rumors, including reports of kidney issues and hospitalizations in early 2026, have fueled succession speculation, though Kadyrov has denied illness and promoted family members such as sons Adam and Akhmat into senior security and government roles. Past resignation signals, including a May 2025 request later withdrawn after a Putin meeting, highlight Moscow’s central role in any leadership transition. Clan dynamics, federal oversight, and Kadyrov’s control over local security structures remain key factors in potential changes to the post.
