California's 48th congressional district holds its June 2, 2026, top-two primary for an open House seat following Republican Darrell Issa's retirement. The district, redrawn under Proposition 50, now leans slightly Democratic. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, the Republican frontrunner with local nonpartisan experience and an Issa endorsement, leads recent polling and is positioned to advance. A crowded Democratic field includes San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and former Obama administration official Ammar Campa-Najjar, whose campaigns feature mutual criticism over strategy and background. Other Democratic entrants trail in surveys. The nonpartisan format means the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, proceed to the November general election.
