The June 2 top-two primary for California's 48th congressional district features a consolidated Republican field behind San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who received endorsements from retiring incumbent Darrell Issa and President Trump after mid-decade redistricting shifted the San Diego-Riverside area seat toward greater competitiveness. Multiple Democratic candidates, including San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and former Obama administration staffer Ammar Campa-Najjar, compete for the second advancement spot in a crowded primary where internal polling and candidate positioning indicate close competition among leading contenders. Trader positioning aligns with Desmond's unified party support and the risks of Democratic vote fragmentation ahead of the general election.
