California's 48th congressional district features an open seat following Republican Rep. Darrell Issa's retirement, with redistricting under Proposition 50 shifting the San Diego-area district toward a slight Democratic lean. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond quickly entered as the leading Republican, securing endorsements from Issa and President Trump, positioning him to advance from the June 2, 2026 top-two primary. On the Democratic side, San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and former Obama administration official Ammar Campa-Najjar lead a crowded field, with other candidates including Corinna Contreras and Abel Chavez also on the ballot. Recent polling shows Desmond well ahead among Republicans while the Democratic contest remains fluid, and the nonpartisan primary format means the top two vote-getters regardless of party will advance to the November general election.
