Iván Cepeda secured a clear second-place finish in Colombia’s May 31 first-round presidential vote with roughly 41 percent, trailing only Abelardo de la Espriella’s 44 percent plurality. Pre-election surveys had shown Cepeda leading as the Historic Pact standard-bearer and continuity candidate backed by outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s coalition, yet late momentum for de la Espriella’s tough-on-crime platform narrowed the gap without displacing Cepeda from second. The remaining field, including Paloma Valencia and other center-right and independent contenders, split the balance of support and failed to reach runoff thresholds. With nearly all ballots tallied, official results leave scant room for shifts, though final certification and any narrow recount disputes could still be monitored ahead of the June 21 runoff.
