Iván Cepeda Castro’s commanding position in this Bogotá-specific market stems from the capital’s consistent preference for candidates aligned with the Historic Pact coalition and its emphasis on peace negotiations. As a senator representing Bogotá and a close ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, Cepeda drew strong support from the city’s urban, progressive electorate during the May 31 first round. Other contenders, including former Bogotá mayor Claudia López and center-right figures like Paloma Valencia, fragmented votes nationally without mounting a credible challenge in the capital. With the election concluded and preliminary results confirming Cepeda’s national second-place finish behind Abelardo de la Espriella, full certification of Bogotá tallies remains the key outstanding factor. Late shifts in verified counts or successful legal challenges could theoretically alter the outcome, though such developments face substantial procedural hurdles.
