Elevated April 2026 CPI at 3.8% year-over-year, fueled by energy price surges amid Middle East developments, combined with a resilient labor market featuring steady payrolls and 4.3% unemployment, has anchored trader consensus on the Pause–Pause–Pause outcome at 93% implied probability. The federal funds rate target has remained at 3.50%–3.75% following the April FOMC decision, with futures and prediction markets pricing minimal odds of cuts through July amid above-target core inflation near 2.8%. This positioning reflects the Fed’s data-dependent stance, where policy remains appropriately restrictive. The May CPI release on June 10 and the June 16–17 FOMC meeting, including updated projections, represent key near-term catalysts; softer inflation prints or clear labor market softening could modestly reopen cut expectations and shift odds.
